Here and Now

The war between Lebanon and Israel makes me wonder about how near we truly are to the end of the age. Tsunamis and earthquakes, terrorist attacks leading to massive displacement of people and eventually famine, economic bankruptcy, all sorts of both man made and natural disasters make me feel my utter smallness in this very huge world. We can’t even stand by our achievements because as the writer of the book of Ecclesiastes say, “All is a chasing after the wind.”

Meanwhile, my former classmate finds joy in teaching and plans to get a masters degree in education; my aunt plays at the casino with her amiga; a missionary cousin is preparing to study French in either Senegal or Canada; my brother starts his small tourist business in the city, a niece applies for scholarship at the Ateneo and my mother routinely scrubs the floor.

Both the big and small events overwhelm me and I can’t help but look for meaning in even the geometric pattern of windows that is my only view from this room.

I need to be amazed.
